Rural Hospitals Leapfrog classifies a hospital to be in an urban area if it is located in a county classified by the Office of Management and Budget as part of a Metropolitan Statistical Area (or part of a Combined Statistical Area). Otherwise, hospitals are considered to be located in a rural area. (See http://www.whitehouse.gov/omb/assets/omb/bulletins/fy2009/09-01.pdf for a list of counties included in Metropolitan Areas.) Exception: A Critical Access Hospital located in an urban county is nevertheless classified as "rural" for purposes of the Leapfrog Hospital Survey.
Perform 4 of 6 High-risk Procedures Hospitals that perform 4 or more of the 6 high-risk surgical procedures. These will tend to be the regional, academic medical center type facilities. |
