Record Numbers Report to the
2006 Leapfrog Hospital Survey
More hospitals are voluntarily reporting their performance on quality and safety measures than ever before. Each year since the inception of the Leapfrog Hospital Quality and Safety Survey, the number of hospitals reporting has risen significantly. This year, the number who responded by the June 30 target deadline rose to 1,086, up from 933 in 2005 and 714 in 2004. Each year, Leapfrog sets an initial target deadline by which hospitals should report. If they cannot meet this deadline, hospitals are encouraged to submit their responses throughout the calendar year. By year’s end, 1,220 hospitals had responded to the 2005 survey.
“The Leapfrog Group is buoyed by this clear display of our survey’s acceptance among US hospitals,” commented Suzanne Delbanco, CEO, The Leapfrog Group. “Hospitals’ commitment to public reporting is critical for consumers who want to make informed choices about where to seek health care.”
Now in its fifth year, the Leapfrog Hospital Quality and Safety Survey has helped to spark a powerful trend in public reporting among US hospitals and is now one of the most recognized ways they demonstrate their commitment to transparency, quality improvement and the prevention of medical errors within their facilities. Every single hospital system that contracts with Tenet and/or HCA met this year’s survey deadline.
Coinciding with the increase in hospital participation is the interest that both hospitals and consumers are showing in the survey results. Visits to the Leapfrog website where hospital ratings can be viewed by the public have jumped from about 34,000 during the month of July 2005 to nearly 44,000 during July 2006. Leapfrog posts the initial set of survey results at the beginning of July and updates the results monthly throughout the year as more hospitals participate or update their responses.
