Leapfrog on the New IOM Report on Pay For Performance

The Institute of Medicine released on September 21, 2006 a report by the Committee on Redesigning Health Insurance Performance Measures, Payment, and Performance Improvement Programs called “Rewarding Provider Performance: Aligning Incentives in Medicare.” The report analyzes the risks and potential benefits of instituting a pay for performance program within Medicare and also provides recommendations for implementing such a program.

The Leapfrog Group heartily supports the IOM’s work in the pay for performance arena, but feels strongly that implementation of such programs be swift and, wherever possible, coordinated with the private sector. “Incentive and reward programs are still far from a science, but the health care market needs quick, serious action. Pay for performance embodies such a basic concept – rewarding high performance – that we can’t afford to move too slowly,” commented Suzanne Delbanco, CEO, The Leapfrog Group.
