White paper available to explain Leapfrog's new EBHR Survival Predictor
A new composite measure, which predicts a hospital’s future mortality rates (a.k.a. "survival predictor"), will be introduced in the 2008 Leapfrog Hospital Survey. With funding from the National Institute of Aging (NIA), Drs. Justin Dimick and John Birkmeyer from the University of Michigan and Douglas Staiger, PhD from Dartmouth Medical School, developed these measures that are designed to optimally forecast hospital performance, based on prior hospital volumes and prior mortality rates. The composite measure will be applied to all of the EBHR high-risk surgeries, except for bariatric surgery, and will be displayed as an independent score on the consumer site.
For more detail on the measures, a white paper has been made available. The authors have submitted their work for publication and review, and once it has been published, a link to the article will be provided.
