Why Submit Data to Leapfrog AND to IHI?

•Targeted hospitals that do not submit their data to version 3.1 of Leapfrog’s hospital survey by June 30th will be listed as "did not disclose.”

• IHI in its 100,000 Lives Campaign is providing support for hospitals to make a commitment to increase their internal quality improvement activities to save lives; it is not however, providing comparative hospital results.

• IHI collects mortality information (acute care inpatient mortality data) from participating hospitals in order to calculate lives saved in those hospitals. Only aggregated hospital data will be publicly reported by the 100K Lives Campaign; individual hospital performance metrics, including hospital mortality rates, will not be made public. The Leapfrog Group reports on individual hospital performance for hospitals across the country who participate in the Leapfrog Group Quality and Patient Safety survey.  This hospital-specific information can be used by consumers and purchasers to inform their decisions.

• Leapfrog collects hospital information for two purposes: 1) public reporting of comparative hospital information to improve purchaser and consumer decisions regarding where to get the best care; and 2) to drive improvement as a result of the movement of patients to high performing health care providers.

• Research has shown that making provider specific information transparent has a major impact on improving quality.

• Leapfrog also supports IHI’s efforts because they work directly with hospitals to improve their internal processes.  Leapfrog and IHI are working now to find more ways to support each other’s efforts.

• Hospitals participating in IHI will receive credit where appropriate for their actions in the Leapfrog hospital survey.

• Leapfrog reminds hospitals that it is not enough to commit to IHI’s internal quality improvement—employers and consumers require publicly- reported comparative information for better decision making about where to get care.  Patients need both efforts—overcoming the quality chasm requires significant investment by hospitals!!
