Call to Action: CMS OPPS and ASC Proposed Rule

September 2, 2021

The Leapfrog Group is issued a call to action for individuals and organizations to join with us in urging the Centers for Medicare & Medicaid Services (CMS) to make safety and quality data about ambulatory surgery centers (ASCs) more accessible to the public.

Leapfrog is strongly urging CMS to require all accredited ASCs to submit comprehensive safety and quality data to a nonprofit organization with extensive experience in collecting and reporting hospital and ASC quality data on a public website, such as The Leapfrog Group.  More and more complex surgeries are moving to an outpatient setting, yet patients and purchasers do not have access to enough information to be able to make an informed decision on where to go for care. It is critical for CMS to make this requirement to ensure Medicare beneficiaries have access to the safest, highest quality surgical care possible.

Leapfrog commented on several areas within the proposed rule as seen in our letter.

Twenty-three organizations and individuals signed on to our letter in response to the Hospital Outpatient Prospective Payment System and Ambulatory Surgical Center Payment System Proposed Rule that was submitted to CMS on September 17, 2021.  View a summary analysis of the final OPPS rule here
