Throughout my career, I have been fortunate to experience health care from various angles. From my early days on the payor side to my current role, which immerses me in the complexities of health care from the employer and policy perspectives, I’ve accumulated knowledge about the multifaceted nature of this industry.
One of the most profound influences on my path has been my father. As a Hematologist Oncologist for over forty years, he dedicated his life to patient care. His retirement coincided with the start of some significant health mergers across the state. I listened as discussions about how new ownership could impact the quality of patient care began to unfold. This experience opened my eyes to the complexities and pressures faced by all stakeholders within the health care system. Witnessing the struggle to maintain professional standards while navigating the evolving health care landscape profoundly shaped my understanding of the importance of quality care.
This backdrop has fueled my unwavering belief that delivering high-quality, high-value care at fair prices is essential—not just a privilege but a non-negotiable right for every individual in my community and beyond. It has become clear to me that the complexities of health care demand a dedicated approach to ensuring positive outcomes for all stakeholders involved.
This belief is what inspired me to pursue the Bruce Bradley Fellowship. The comprehensive Leapfrog Hospital Survey, detailed Hospitals Safety Grades, and transparent public reporting for health systems, employers and consumers offered by Leapfrog create a unique and invaluable resource. Their educational initiatives further empower patients and health care systems alike, fostering a culture of informed decision-making in the pursuit of high-quality health care.
Starting the Leapfrog Fellowship with a two-day trip to the Leapfrog offices in Washington, DC, and a visit to the Capitol to meet with representatives and discuss our work was an incredible opportunity. It allowed me to fully immerse myself in the mission and values of The Leapfrog Group, meet with the incredible Leapfrog staff and connect with the other Fellows.
Becoming a Fellow represents an opportunity to enhance my knowledge and skills and be part of something bigger. It allows me to contribute to meaningful change in the health care landscape in Michigan and beyond. I am excited about leveraging the insights gained through this Fellowship to advocate for high-quality care that is accessible to everyone. I’m looking forward to this journey and to the prospect of making a tangible difference in health care delivery.
