How Ratings Are Used

The Leapfrog ASC Survey was first launched on April 1, 2019. In October 2019, Leapfrog released its first report summarizing trends on the safety and quality of care for same-day surgical services nationwide. This report features aggregate national data from the 2019 Leapfrog ASC Survey and the Outpatient Procedures section of the 2019 Leapfrog Hospital Survey. Download the report here.

In September 2020, Leapfrog began scoring responses and publicly reporting Survey Results by facility on our public reporting website. In addition, Leapfrog publicly reports Survey Results from the Outpatient Procedures section of the Leapfrog Hospital Survey. These new Survey Results allow participating facilities, consumers, payers, purchasers, and others to compare the safety and quality of these two care settings (ambulatory surgery centers and hospital outpatient departments) using a comparable and standardized set of national patient safety and quality measures.

In 2021, The Leapfrog Group announced its first ever Top Ambulatory Surgery Center awards. Top ASCs are acknowledged in a national press release and participate in an in-person awards ceremony. To be eligible for a 2024 Top ASC Award, ASCs must submit a Leapfrog ASC Survey by August 31.

On April 1, 2026 Leapfrog launched a major redesign of the Leapfrog ASC Survey, now known as the ASC Public Reporting Program, to vastly increase safety and quality ratings available to the public. There are three elements of the new public reporting. First, we will report and score thirteen (13) performance measures from CMS. Second, we will report achievement on five (5) additional measures for ASCs that provide us with their accreditation certificate from either of two accrediting bodies. Finally, we will report on the results of a revised and shortened ASC Survey 2.0.

Visitors to our public reporting website will be able to see and compare ASCs’ progress towards achieving these robust, evidence-based patient safety and quality standards; identify ASCs that have earned Leapfrog’s prestigious Top ASC Award; and quickly identify those ASCs that have demonstrated full transparency through voluntary reporting.

Leapfrog’s new ASC Public Reporting Program is the result of a year of intense engagement with our Ambulatory Surgery Center Advisory Committee, outreach to ASC networks and health systems, meetings with leading accrediting organizations including the Accreditation Association for Ambulatory Health Care (AAAHC) and Joint Commission (JC), and close consultation with Leapfrog’s community of authoritative experts in performance improvement, including our national expert panels, the research team at Johns Hopkins Armstrong Institute for Patient Safety and Quality and, above all, our constituency of purchasers, employers, and consumer advocates.

Leapfrog ASC Survey Results are also featured in various print and digital media outlets, such as in news stories and articles, as well as in our Leapfrog Case Studies
